Elten Hill with St.Vitus Church and Drusus FountainEmmerich am Rhein
St. Vitus Collegiate Church – more than 1000 years old – is situated on top of the Elten Hill (82 m high). It belonged to an abbey with a nunnery, founded by Wichmann von Gent. The Drusus fountain, also more than 1000 years old and 57 m deep, served as water supply for the abbey. The water level amounts to 21.5 m above sea level. Just behind the Vitus Church you see the STEINTOR with two colums of 6,80 m, made from a granite block of 50 tons. Standing between the two columns, the view goes to the 350 year old baroque gardens of Kleve. Take a seat on the abbess chair and let the magnificant view tell its own tale. Indulge yourself with a visit to the path for barefoot walking with different subsurfaces or with a side trip to Gerritzen’s windmill on the “Möllenbölt” with its bistro.
